With a population as diverse as America’s, one is bound to have at least one, and likely more English Language Learner. For those who are learning English as a second language, keeping up socially and academically in a classroom can be incredibly challenging. While together with their classmates they are tasked with learning new material, they have the additional challenge of learning it in a language that is unfamiliar to them, which aids in many of them falling behind their peers. For teachers, this also presents a challenge as they struggle to juggle teaching the class as a whole, while giving the English Language Learners the additional support they need. Technology, however, has the potential to tremendously change the imbalance in the classroom caused for ELL’s by their unfamiliarity with the language.
