Week 2: Task #2
Segregation
in New York City’s schools has been an ongoing problem that has led to many groups
to begin advocating for new policies and change. Mayor Bill de Blasio formed a group
called the “School Diversity and Advisory Group” in late 2017, and it was tasked
with researching the issues and making recommendations to further integrate the
city’s schools.
This past
February, the committee finally submitted their recommendations to the Mayor’s office.
Their recommendations included tailored integration targets for elementary and
middle schools based on the boroughs and district’s demographics and making certain
districts devise diversity plans. They also recommended forming a task force charged with making PTA fundraising more equitable, instituting diversity
measure in school quality reports, and implementing ethnic study courses for
students. While their recommendations were greeted with a lot of enthusiasm,
many were still critical of the fact that it did not address gifted programs
and the selective-screening process of middle schools.
On June
11, the Mayor’s office announced that it was embracing almost all of the group’s
recommendations, which is a big score for advocates of diversity. While the adoption
of these recommendations are a big step in the right direction, and will help
ensure that schools become more integrated, that students in any school feel
honored and welcomed, that teachers will be trained to be culturally
responsive, and racial disparities in suspensions will be eliminated, many
argue that this is not enough.
Whichever
side of the argument one is on, however, these new policies are definitely a
step in the right direction and prove that the city is taking these matters of
integration seriously. Because of these new policies, schools will better represent
the demographics of the borough, teachers will be better trained and more
sensitive to various cultures that fill their classrooms, and extra grants will
be given to schools that are making specific efforts to further integrate. The
extra support and grants given to these schools will ensure that students have
equal access to important resources, like textbooks, supplies, and technology,
to help them with the school work.
Additionally,
the more integrated schools become, the more comfortable minorities will feel
in these schools, and it becomes even more likely that the teachers will craft and
design their curriculums to meet their needs.
